Anonymous Info about Frequent Flier ALliances 0 May 28 2007, 1:46 AM EDT by Anonymous

Hi, I am an MBA student and am doing a research paper on Customer Loyalty Programs. Wanted to know from you how is billing done among partners in Airline Alliances? Are accounts maintained and a system of Debits and Credits is followed? Is the settlement of accounts done weekly/monthly or Quarterly? how is settlement done after settlement is done (In cash/ or miles are carried forward) ?

A friend told me that some of his airline miles expired recently, but I don't think mine ever have. What's the story here? Do some airlines points expire and others don't (if so which ones)? How can I tell? Are airlines allowed to just take them away like that -- especially if its so hard to actually use them (so many restrictions, etc.)? And what about American Express MR points -- do they expire?

I tried so so hard to get tickets to Delhi from NYC after Christmas but ended up only being able to book at ticket using 150,000 miles on AA. Did I mention that I am sitting in coach? How can I get upgraded on an award ticket.
